Actress / Singer

Biography

Donia Massoud is a singer, actress and music researcher, renowned for her contributions to music performance, ethnology, documentation and rearrangement of almost disappearing music heritage from Egypt and the Arabic speaking region.
Between 2000 and 2010, Donia Massoud has travelled to several Arab villages collecting a nearly lost heritage of sacred and profane songs and music material.
Discovering theatrical and choreographic material related to that music heritage, Donia’s renditions of this collection took a theatre and performance based turn, staging these works into unique works that straddle the format of concert, plays and performance art.
Her work has toured extensively in the Arabic Speaking World and Europe for almost two decades and was presented on reputable world stages.

In addition to her music, while still living in Egypt Donia joined the theater group Al-Warsha and starred in several films, TV series and theater shows in Egypt and Sweden, in both Arabic and English, including Galteny Mogremen (2006) by Amr Arafa, In the Heliopolis Flat (2007) by Mohamed Khan and Genenet al asmak (2008) by Yousry Nasrallah.
In 2013, she moved to Paris where she actually lives.
In 2022, she portrayed the role of Scheherazade in Shall I Compare You to a Summer Day?, presented at Berlinale Film Festival.
She plays George’s wife in Tarik Saleh’s film The Eagles of the Republic, in competition for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2025.
She is currently working on a theater and dance project with choreographer and dancer Nancy Naous.
